What is a self care day?

A self care day is simply the best day of the week in my opinion. It’s a day where you put aside all the pressures and worries of life and just fully focus on yourself and your well-being. No matter what your guilty pleasure might be, the goal is to feel refreshed and ready for anything once you’re done. A self care day is all about listening to your needs and nurturing yourself from the inside out. It’s a reminder that self care isn’t selfish – it’s essential.

We spend so much time on other people, that we often forget to spend time on ourselves and get to know ourselves better. And besides that, the benefits of having a consistent self care Sunday goes far beyond what you might think.

Benefits of a self care day:

    • Reduces stress and anxiety levels.
    • Boosts mood and overall wellness.
    • Improves physical health by ensuring relaxation.
    • Enhances productivity and focus by allowing for mental rejuvenation.
    • Strengthens relationships by creating self-awareness and empathy.
    • Encourages better self-esteem and self-love through acts of kindness towards oneself.
    • Provides a sense of balance and control in your life.
    • Helps prevent burnout and exhaustion by prioritizing personal needs.
    • Creates a deeper sense of gratitude and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.

Self Care Sunday Ideas

The best self care Sunday ideas.

I’ve tried my best to put together a list of self care ideas that will suit every type of personality, and still, there will be a few hits and misses on this one. Everyone is unique and what you might find relaxing can do the complete opposite for someone else. Remember to always listen to yourself and do what you love and bring tranquility toyour life. There is no right or wrong when it comes to self care. You can even invest in a good self care journal to keep you going.

1. Start your day with a morning meditation.

Before even thinking of getting out of bed, start your day with a morning meditation and allow yourself to quiet your mind before the day starts. This is a simple way to quiet the noise of the outside world and connect with your inner self. By taking just a few moments to sit in stillness and focus on your breathing or whichever way you choose to meditate, you create calmness and clarity in your mind making you ready to take on the day ahead.

Whether you take this time to work on your affirmations, get rid of some unwanted stress, or spend time on your religion, it allows you to set the tone for the day. While the tone might not stay that way, especially if you have kids running around, it makes a big difference at the end of the day.

2. Spend some time in nature.

There is no better way to feel complete relaxation than spending time in nature, no matter what you might be doing. Stepping outside and breathing in the fresh air, surrounded by the beauty of the natural world, has an incredible way of soothing the soul and clearing the mind. Whether you take a long stroll through a nearby park, hike along a forest trail, or simply find a quiet spot to sit and soak in the sights and sounds of nature, spending time outdoors can give you a much-needed escape from daily life. Nature has a way of reminding us to slow down, appreciate the beauty around us, and reconnect with our inner selves.

3. Have an at-home spa day.

I don’t know about you, but when I hear the word ‘spa day’ I instantly feel relaxed! Turning your home into a spa is one of the best self care Sunday ideas I’ve tried, from lighting candles to using a face mask and listening to calming music, it really does do the trick! Take your time to pamper yourself from head to toe, focusing on nourishing your body and rejuvenating your spirit. There are a few essentials I would add to any spa day to help make the whole experience so much more authentic.

Things you can try on your at-home spa day:

    • Take a long bubble bath and add your favorite bath salts or essential oils.
    • Light scented candles and play soothing music to create a relaxing ambiance.
    • Use a body scrub to exfoliate and soften your skin from head to toe.
    • Give yourself a manicure and pedicure, complete with nail polish in your favorite color.
    • Give yourself a gentle massage using aromatic massage oils or lotions.
    • Enjoy a cup of herbal tea or infused water while you soak in the tub or relax with a face mask.
    • Practice deep breathing exercises or meditation to enhance relaxation and stress relief.
    • Spend time lounging in plush robes and cozy slippers, allowing yourself to fully unwind and pamper yourself.

4. Journaling.

Personally, journaling is part of my daily routine, but spending a few extra on journaling on your self care Sunday, wouldn’t be a bad idea. Making time to intentionally explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences can be very therapeutic. No matter what you might be journaling about, it creates a safe space for you to share your feelings and be the most authentic version of yourself. Being able to take off your mask and just be yourself already feels like a holiday on its own!

I’ve been a huge fan of journaling over the last few years just because of the many benefits it has for your mental health and you’d be surprised how the words just start flowing once you start expressing yourself. Investing in a good journal is always a great idea because of all the prompts they offer to help you on your journey.

5. Do some yoga.

No matter the day, getting your body to move is one of the most relaxing things you can possibly do. In the spirit of self care Sunday ideas, roll out your yoga mat and get in touch with your inner self. No matter the level you are at when it comes to yoga, the health benefits are undeniable, from increased flexibility and strength to improved mental clarity and stress relief. As you flow through poses, guided by your breathing, you’ll feel tension melt away and relaxation takes over your body.

You don’t have to spend an hour practicing, you just need a few minutes to help release all the tension within your body. Any movement is good movement. There are a few great apps you can follow along to if you are less experienced, and they don’t have to cost a thing.

6. Take a bubble bath.

Technically a bubble bath already fell under one of the previous self care ideas, but I love it so much that I think it deserves its own heading in this article. There is nothing quite as relaxing on a self care Sunday as taking a warm bubble bath with candles burning and aromas filling the air. Add bath oil, a face mask, and some bath pearls and you’re ready to go. When it comes to taking a good bath, more is less! Taking a bath should be a whole experience, and it’s so worth it!

And don’t worry, even if you don’t own a bath, taking a shower can be really relaxing too. Try adding a shower steamer, and a good body scrub and feel the tension washing away.

7. Binge-watch movies or series.

From time to time, we just need to be able to not think, and what better time to do that than a self care Sunday? No matter the type of movie you’re into, it can be really calming to just sit and enjoy all these different emotions you’ll be going through. I love making everything I do a whole experience, and having a self care day is a good excuse to do just that.

Pop some popcorn, grab a few of your favorite snacks, and enjoy every moment of doing nothing. Being able to move your body is always a good thing, but from time to time, doing absolutely nothing can be just as great for your mind, body, and soul.

8. Get out your green fingers.

I don’t know what it is about gardening, but it is surprisingly relaxing. I am not big on gardening, but before I know it, a whole day has gone by without me even realizing it. You don’t have to even own a big backyard to be able to enjoy gardening. Having a few herbs in your kitchen and tending to them from time to time is just as rewarding. I’ve found a hydroponic system works wonders for small spaces if you want a few fresh additions to your home. Digging into the soil, planting seeds, and watching your garden bloom and flourish fills you with a sense of accomplishment and joy.

Plus, spending time outdoors surrounded by the beauty of nature can reduce stress and boost your mood significantly. Try adding gardening to your self care ideas list when planning your next self care Sunday, you won’t regret it!

9. Practice gratitude.

It might sound silly at first, but how often do you carve out time in your life to just sit and be grateful? We tend to easily focus on all the negative things in our lives, and we often miss the things we can be grateful for, things we might even take for granted. Taking a moment to reflect on these blessings in your life, big or small, can change your perspective and fill your heart with warmth and appreciation.

Whether you write down a list of things you’re grateful for in a journal or sit in silence for a few moments just taking in all the good in your life, practicing gratitude allows you to find joy in the present moment and embrace the abundance that surrounds you. There are so many benefits to practicing gratitude, that it’s really important to make time for it, no matter how short that time might be.

Benefits of practicing gratitude:

    • Improves happiness and mood instantly.
    • Improves mental health by reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.
    • Increases resilience to stress and adversity.
    • Gives you a positive outlook on life and greater optimism.
    • Boosts self-esteem and self-worth.
    • Encourages mindfulness and present moment awareness.
    • Enhances empathy and compassion towards others.
    • Creates a sense of abundance and contentment in life.

10. Spend time with loved ones.

There is no better way than to forget about the worries of life, than spending time with the people you love. Whether you gather with family, friends, or furry companions, the bonds you share can bring joy, laughter, and a sense of belonging. Spending time with someone you love can lift your mood and remind you of the importance of connection. Although we might have the world at our fingertips, we’ve never been quite as disconnected as we are now and it’s important to cherish those relationships and keep them close.

11. Get creative.

No matter what you might be into, letting your creative side run wild is a great way to get rid of some unwanted tension. Whether you’re painting, drawing, sculpting, or crafting, being in tune with your artistic side allows you to express your emotions and unleash your creativity in a meaningful way. Art gives you a therapeutic outlet for self-expression, allowing you to explore your innermost thoughts and feelings without judgment. Plus, the process of creating something with your own hands can be incredibly empowering and rewarding. You don’t even have to be creative to reap the benefits, just as you enjoy every moment!

I might be slightly less creative than most people, but coloring has become one of my favorite activities to do and I love every moment of it. Experiment with different activities and find something that makes you feel good, it doesn’t have to be good either!

12. Give yourself a digital detox.

As great as technology can be, giving yourself a break from time to time is just as good for the soul. Disconnecting from screens allows you to reclaim precious moments of solitude and reconnect with the world around you. Whether it’s scrolling through social media feeds, answering emails, or binge-watching TV shows, constant exposure to technology can leave us feeling drained and overwhelmed. Spending an entire day without any type of screen can have a world of benefits that might even surprise you. Being able to enjoy every moment of your day without taking the attention away by technology, creates memories that will last forever.

Sure those memories might not be captured in a photo, but you’ll always remember those days you gave your undivided attention to the world and people around you.

13. Go to bed early.

Most of us try to get every last minute out of our weekend and we end up going to bed much later than we usually would and this could have negative effects on your well-being. When you turn in early, you honor your body’s need for rest and rejuvenation, allowing it to repair and recharge overnight and be ready for the week ahead. Getting enough sleep is linked to improved mood, cognitive function, and physical health, making it one of the most valuable investments you can make in yourself. Finding a good sleeping routine and sticking to it will also help balance your body and sleep cycle more effectively.

After a well-deserved self care Sunday, going to best with a calm, peaceful mind is the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Conclusion.

Remember, a self care Sunday is all about honoring yourself and nourishing your mind, body, and soul. So, choose a few self care ideas and enjoy a well-deserved day of relaxation. Whatever you choose, make sure to put yourself first and make self care a non-negotiable part of your weekly routine. You can’t take care of others if you aren’t taken care of and that starts with you.

Happy relaxing,
