The Best Homemade Face Scrub Recipes To Try.

There are so many skincare products on the market that it’s really hard to stay on top of what you’re actually using on your skin. Not only is making your face scrub more affordable, but it gives you complete control over the ingredients you’re putting on your skin. No one knows your skin better than you do, so give it everything it needs. These are my favorite homemade face scrub recipes and the best part is, you don’t have to use them JUST on your face. They are great for the rest of your body too.

Does using a homemade face scrub work as well as store-bought?

There’s nothing wrong with making your face scrub as home, keeping in mind that you choose the right ingredients for your skin type. Store-bought face scrubs often undergo rigorous testing and contain specific formulations tailored to address various skin concerns, offering a convenient solution for those wanting targeted skincare solutions. However, homemade face scrubs have their own benefits, like using ingredients readily available in your kitchen to gently exfoliate and nourish the skin. The effectiveness of a homemade scrub largely depends on the quality and compatibility of its ingredients with your skin type.

While some may find homemade options just as effective, others may prefer the convenience and consistency of store-bought products. The efficacy of a face scrub—whether homemade or store-bought— depends on your preferences, skin type, and specific skincare needs. Experiment with a few options and make sure the ingredients you choose with love your skin type too.

Homemade face scrub recipes to try at home.

One of the best ways to look after your skin is by scrubbing all those impurities away. It’s important to also find the balance when exfoliating your skin, as exfoliating too often is bad for your skin. Don’t be afraid to experiment with natural ingredients to see which works best with your skin and the conditions you might be trying to fix. I suggest using glass jars to store your scrub in to get the best shelf life from your product.

Acne-clearing face scrub recipes.

There are so many ingredients that work great for acne-prone skin, but my top two would have to be green tea and tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has a lot of antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which fight acne-causing bacteria while reducing inflammation and redness. Green tea on the other hand is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins, which help to soothe irritated skin and reduce sebum production, helping reduce breakouts. Green tea also has great anti-inflammatory properties. I love adding jojoba oil to any scrub that doesn’t have enough “glide” to it. Jojoba oil has many great benefits for your skin, but any other oil you might prefer will do the trick.

Tea Tree Oil & Sugar Scrub.
  • 3 Tbs Brown Sugar.
  • 6 Drops of Tea Tree essential oil.
  • 3 Tbs Jojoba oil.

Mix the sugar and tea tree oil and add jojoba oil for additional moisturizing benefits. Apply to damp skin, massage gently in circular motions, then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Green Tea & Baking Soda Scrub.
  • 3 Tbs brewed Green tea (cooled).
  • 3 Tbs Baking Soda.

Mix the brewed Green tea and baking soda to form a paste. Apply to damp skin, massage in gentle circular motions for a minute or two, then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Face scrub recipes for glowing skin.

These are some of the best homemade face scrub recipes for glowing skin in my opinion, there are a few other ingredients you can use like lemon and avocado to give you the glow you’re after. But these face scrub recipes stand out the most to me. For these recipes, you can use either coconut oil or jojoba oil where oil is required. Papaya contains an enzyme called papain, which gently exfoliates the skin, removing dead cells and revealing a smoother, brighter complexion. Papaya is also rich in a ton of vitamins that nourish and rejuvenate the skin.

Honey is a natural humectant, attracting moisture to the skin and locking it in, resulting in a hydrated and dewy appearance. The antibacterial properties of honey help prevent breakouts, promoting clear and glowing skin. Turmeric is well known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which work together to reduce inflammation, fade dark spots, and even out skin tone, leaving you with glowing skin.

Papaya & Honey Scrub.
  • 1/2 Cup mashed ripe Papaya.
  • 2 Tbs Honey.
  • 2 Tbs Oatmeal.

Mix the mashed papaya, oats, and honey. Apply to damp skin, leave on for 5-10 minutes, then gently massage and rinse off with warm water.

Turmeric & Sugar Scrub.
  • 3 Tbs Brown Sugar.
  • 2 Tsp Turmeric.
  • 2 Tbs Jojoba or Coconut oil.

Mix all the ingredients. Apply to damp skin, gently massage in circular motions for a minute or two, then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Hydrating face scrub recipes.

When it comes to homemade face scrub recipes, making sure they have a little boost of hydration won’t do any harm. Whether you’re looking to combat winter dryness or simply treat yourself to some self-care, these recipes are easy and won’t break the bank one bit. Make sure to only use your face scrub 2-3 times per week and not daily to avoid damaging your skin barrier. Also think about adding a hydrating serum to your skin after exfoliating, to help maintain a healthy skin barrier and lock in moisture.

Coconut milk is rich in fatty acids and vitamins E and C, which deeply moisturize and nourish the skin, leaving it soft and supple. Cucumber is packed with water content and antioxidants, giving you instant hydration while calming and soothing irritated or inflamed skin. Greek yogurt contains lactic acid, which gently exfoliates and hydrates the skin, leaving it radiant and refreshed. I don’t who about you, but those sound like pretty great ingredients to me!

Cucumber & Yogurt Scrub.
  • 1/2 Cucumber, blended.
  • 4 Tbs Greek yogurt.
  • 2 Tbs Almond flour.

Blend the cucumber until smooth, then mix it with yogurt and almond flour. Apply to damp skin, massage gently in circular motions, then rinse off with cool water.

Coconut Milk & Honey Scrub.
  • 4 Tbs Coconut Milk.
  • 2 Tbs Honey.
  • 4 Tbs Oatmeal.

Mix all the ingredients until you have a thick paste. Apply to damp skin, massage gently in circular motions, then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Is sugar or salt better for exfoliating your skin?

You will find so many different homemade face scrub recipes and sometimes it’s hard to determine which ingredients will be best for your skin. The truth is, it depends on your skin type and the results you are after. Both ingredients have different benefits and can be good for your skin in their own way. Sugar has a finer texture and natural humectant properties, that gently buffs away dead skin cells while locking in moisture, making it an excellent choice for those with sensitive or dry skin.

Salt on the other hand is a coarser texture with a mineral-rich composition, giving you an intense exfoliation that is great for those with oily or acne-prone skin, as it helps to unclog pores and remove excess oil. Try experimenting with different scrubs to see which one suits your skin the best.
