As they say, a good day starts with a good morning skincare routine. And the key to a good skin day? A solid morning skincare routine. Here are the essential steps for your daily morning routine and the reasons why each one matters. I started seeing a real change in my skin when my morning skincare routine became the most important part of me getting ready for the day. It doesn’t have to take up a lot of time, but it is important to follow the guidelines for your skin type.

Reasons why you should follow a morning skincare routine.

It’s never a bad thing to take good care of your skin and that starts with a good skincare routine in the morning and in the evening. Here are a few things I’ve noticed improvement on in my own skin after starting a solid skincare routine and a few benefits you might not have known.

  • Hydration: Moisturizing in the morning helps to maintain skin hydration levels, preventing dryness and flakiness throughout the day.
  • Prevents premature aging: Regular skincare, including the use of antioxidants and SPF, can help prevent premature aging by reducing the impact of sun damage and environmental stressors.
  • Boosts confidence: Clear, well-maintained skin contributes to a positive self-image, boosting confidence and promoting a healthier mental outlook.
  • Improves makeup application: A good skincare routine provides a smooth canvas for makeup application, ensuring a more even and long-lasting finish.
  • Prevents acne and breakouts: Proper cleansing in the morning helps remove excess oil and impurities, reducing the likelihood of acne and breakouts.

Wash your face.

Washing your face is the first step in removing impurities and oils accumulated during the night. Choose a cleanser that suits your skin type. Avoid using harsh cleansers that can strip your skin of its natural oils because this can cause dryness, irritation and even acne. You want to leave your skin clean but not over-cleansed. If you tend to have an extremely dry skin, avoid washing your face in the morning and just splash your face with water to maintain all the natural oils on your skin.

Apply toner.

Toning helps to rebalance your skin’s pH level after cleansing and primes your skin so that it can effectively absorb your skincare products. Choose a hydrating toner if you tend to have try skin with ingredients like hyaluronic acid that locks in moisture, soothes inflammation and even out your skin’s texture. I recently came across the Anua Heartleaf Soothing Toner and quite liked it. Make sure to find a toner that fits with any skin concerns that you might have.

Toner also helps to tighten pores and reduce their visibility, giving your skin a smoother appearance.

Use a serum or essence.

Serums provide concentrated treatments for specific skin concerns, such as hydration, brightening, and anti-aging. They typically contain powerful ingredients like antioxidants or retinoids, which can help to protect skin from free radicals and repair damage. The consistency of serums and essences is generally lightweight, so they absorb quickly into the skin and can be layered under moisturizer. Find a serum that best suit the needs of your skin and stick to one that shows results. I use a few different brands because I don’t necessarily like all the products from one specific brand and that’s fine too. I started adding a retinol serum into my morning routine and would definitely recommend it!

Apply moisturizer with SPF.

Moisturizing is important to keep your skin hydrated, plump and youthful-looking. Choose a moisturizer that fits your skin type. For oily skin, a lightweight and oil-free formula is ideal while thicker formulas work best for dry skin. With the daytime moisturizer, it is important to choose one that has SPF to protect against sun damage. You can even use a shielding moisturizer when you live in more polluted, crowded areas to protect your skin against environmental damage.

Sun exposure can speed up the aging process, cause dark spots, and even increase the risk of skin cancer.

Use eye cream.

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest and most fragile of your face. It is essential to use an eye cream to prevent wrinkles, fine lines and dark circles. Choose a formula packed with antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and peptides to hydrate, brighten and revitalize the skin around the eyes. I don’t know about you, but I love applying eye cream under my eyes, it gives me a sense of relaxation. Strange, but it’s the best part of my routine and I tend to stretch it out!

Never leave the house without sunscreen.

If there is one golden rule when it comes to skincare, it’s to never leave the house without sunscreen. Sunscreen acts as a shield against the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays, the primary cause of premature aging, sunburns, and skin cancer. By applying sunscreen daily, you create a protective barrier that defends your skin from the damaging impact of environmental stressors. It helps prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin, key proteins responsible for maintaining skin’s elasticity and firmness. I prefer using a tinted sunscreen on days I don’t feel like wearing too much makeup. If you have an oily skin, opt for a matt sunscreen to help control shine.

The order of your morning skincare routine.

This might seem silly, but the order in which you apply your skincare products does make a difference. When you first start getting into skincare, no one tells you how or when to use these products, so let’s clear that up.

  1. Cleanser: Start with a gentle cleanser to remove any impurities or excess oils from your skin.
  2. Toner: Apply a toner to balance the skin’s pH levels and prepare it for the subsequent products.
  3. Serum: Use a serum containing active ingredients like antioxidants or hyaluronic acid to address specific skin concerns.
  4. Eye Cream: If you use an eye cream, apply it before moisturizer to address concerns like puffiness or dark circles.
  5. Moisturizer: Use a suitable moisturizer to hydrate and lock in moisture. This step helps maintain the skin barrier.
  6. Sunscreen: Finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from UV rays.
  7. Makeup (if applicable): If you wear makeup, apply it after your skincare routine is complete.
